Not Even Hainan

Hainan Island is known as the Hawaii of the Orient.  When I talked with the girls Sunday evening their time they had left the Island and were back in Guangzhou.  I was surprised to hear Cici say that it was not fun going there.  They were excited about doing their final preparations for coming home, but first, her birthday must be celebrated.  Given a choice I think she would just head on home immediately and celebrate her birthday in Houston.

Meantime, back in Houston I had lunch with Cici's older sister on Saturday.  She was in town for a few days but she starts law school at my alma mater later this month.  It is hard to believe but the same Assistant Dean of Admissions still holds his position at the law school.  He remembers me, perhaps because my name is on a plaque on the wall where only  2 or 3 students in each graduating class manage to leave their mark as summa cum laude graduates of the law school, though I have seen him a few times since graduating 30 years ago.  That may make it tougher for my daughter, studying in my shadow, but it may have helped her get the scholarship they gave her.  I gave her the law dictionary that I bought when I started law school.  I also outlined my study strategy for her.  The outcome is up to her now.

It is back to school for my older son's wife as well.  He got his masters degree from Rhode Island School of Design about two years ago.  Now his wife will study for her master's degree at Yale University beginning later this month.  My younger son will return to Houston on Monday after his internship with the investment banking firm in New York City this summer.  He will return to the University of Texas Plan II Program this month to complete his studies after working on deals all summer using his Spanish and Portuguese language skills.

Cici's acquired siblings are setting the education bar pretty high for her but I think she is up to the challenge.  I told her yesterday that she needs to go to college somewhere close to home because this summer has been too difficult without her being close by.  I have been pushing the idea of Texas A & M.  Cici doesn't want to attend a small college, and A & M is in the top 10 in size.  It is also just 1.5 hours away by car, so we could see her often.

Right now I just want to get her back home where she belongs.  Ping will see to that.
