Just Talking to Myself

The number of visitors to our little place on the web remains strong, even spiking higher recently, but everyone is mute.  If anyone remembers the movie, Scent of a Woman, you need to give me a Hoooahhh to let me know you are reading along.

This Seattle Mountain coffee I am drinking just doesn't measure up for me.  They call it French Roast, which usually means a dark roast and a robust flavor, but it tastes rather wimpy to me.  Another experiment gone bad, but that is the only way to discover the really good flavors.

I showed my new license plate to Ping on the webcam last night, but I turned it upside down so it read "OX" instead of "XO."  I need top put these puppies on the Pilot this weekend.  It is about to celebrate its 7th anniversary with the turn of 100,000 miles on the odometer.  That means it will have to pass the 99999 mark, at which time I need to be stopped and have my camera to take a photo of it for the girls.  The 9 is a lucky number in China, and the more 9's together the better.  It means forever.  I will change the timing belt at the 105,000 mile service interval and see how many more miles it will run.

We are grooming the Pilot to be Cici's car for college.  She likes it because it is big and it is black.  My son went off to college with my Explorer four years ago and he is still driving it.  I think he is pushing 150,000 miles on the odometer but he won't consider changing vehicles.  It has hauled things to and from college every summer, and served as a junk storage place in between.  I bet that Cici will keep the Pilot more like Ping keeps her car:  not one piece of paper or anything else mars the sparkling clean interior of her car.

The girls have given me my marching orders.  Get ready because they can't wait to return to our home, they told me.  They are counting down the days.  So am I.

      Thanks for the Hoooahhh, Harry.

I think the only rap against the Pilot has been its transmission, but Honda had a recall shortly after I bought ours and the modification is supposed to have fixed the problem.  So far it has just required tires and brake pads other than regular service intervals.  There is a family owned repair shop that I take it to for service beyond oil changes.  They only work on Hondas and Toyotas, so they know the vehicles very well.

At the 90,000 mile service I toyed with the idea of changing the timing belt but they encouraged me to just wait until the 105,000 mile service when it is supposed to be changed.  When we change the timing belt, we will be able to reach and replace the two broken motor mounts very inexpensively, they said.  In the meantime, it is no problem to drive with them broken.  That is a good thing because they have been broken for about 6 years.

Cici and Ping have developed an affection for the Pilot and love the idea of Cici taking it to college.  That only gives me a couple of more years to enjoy it, though I am generally of the opinion that a college freshman doesn't need a vehicle.  If the girls agree, that will give me another year with old faithful.

    Hoooahhh!

Well, just not as much these days. Summer and all that stuff.

Isn't a Pilot kind of big for a freshman? Shouldn't her first car be something that won't do much damage, or if damaged at school won't be something to cry over?

Oh, and my Subaru is nearing a quarter of a million miles, and it's on it's third timing belt. My father's early 80s Accord... Well I don't know how many miles that car had on it, but he rebuilt the transmission twice so I'm guessing over half a million miles.

Take care Lee, and enjoy the summer!

      Welcome back Smitty.

Cici loves the Pilot because it is big.  She and Ping like to say that they are big girls, so they like larger vehicles.  These days, though, Cici is looking very slim.  I floated the idea of a Honda Fit for Cici but the girls didn't like that idea at all.  That is what little people in China drive, they said.  Cici needs something large.

Now the truth is that I also love the Pilot.  It is less than a hundred miles from turning 100,000 and it drives like it just came off the lot.
