The Decision is Made
As soon as Ping arrived in China she received the news from Cici. I want to live in Houston, not in China, she told Ping. I only want to come to China to visit in the future, but I do not want to live here. Houston is my home.
Ping was glad to hear the decision. We never pushed Cici toward that decision. We wanted to let her come to that realization on her own. Ping also knows that Houston is her home now and China is just a place to visit.
With the power of a webcam and the internet I spent some time with my girls this evening. Cici was just waking up but Ping was wide awake. I showed them some shirts and a tie that I bought today. They were excited to see them. They wanted to know everything about what is happening here. We want to go eat Vietnamese noodles with you, they told me. Ping has only been there a day and she is already ready to come home. Cici can't wait to get home at this point.
These are my Western girls with Eastern eyes. They have done what many people are never able to do, which is to assimilate into a totally different culture and be happier than they were in their country of birth. I felt comfortable that Cici had made the transition even before she realized it. I think she also knew, but she held out until she returned to China to see for herself. Now that American passport she carries means even more than it did before.
As we say on our video, we are a family of immigrants. America is our home.
