Are You Having Fun?

Each time I talk with Cici on the phone I ask her the same question.  Are you having fun?  The answer so far has not been yes.  In fact, it is pretty clear that she is not having fun so far.   I talked with her last night at bed time and when I got up this morning I had a message to call her.  I asked the question again.  She hesitated before responding:  sort of, but from her tone of voice it seems that the answer is still no.

Her question this morning was about unlocking her phone so she can use it in China.  One of her former classmates suggested she arrange for that to be done and she would be able to use her Droid.  At this point she has a cell phone to use - she answered it when I called this morning - but she says it is very difficult to use it.  I suspect that means it isn't hip to use the old cell phone that a family friend loaned to her, though it may also have some operating difficulties.  I told her I will stop by Verizon after my meetings this morning and ask them about the unlocking process.

Cici also told Ping that her bed in China is very hard and uncomfortable.  This is the same bed she slept on before she came to America.  Her mattress here is very firm - more firm than many people would like - but Cici has always like it.  Now she likes it even more.  She misses sleeping on it.  Score 1 for Houston.

Before Cici left she always talked about the delicious food she wanted to eat in China.  Now that she has arrived, she hasn't mentioned food once.  I need to ask a question about it directly and see what she says.  Could it be that it is not as delicious as she remembered it to be?

One thing that Cici was very proud of before she left for China: she weighed one pound less than she weighed when she arrived in America.  Because she has grown about an inch since arriving, she is more slender than before, so we have talked about variations of the word slender:  slim, skinny, willowy.  If you are going to eat all that good food in China, you will gain a lot of weight, I told her before she left.  No, because I will walk everywhere in China, she responded.  I know she used to walk a lot, but it doesn't sound like she has done much walking so far since she returned.  Maybe that will change when her former classmates finish their final exams this week.
