National Honor Society

I received an instant message from Cici a few minutes ago telling me that she just learned that she was selected for National Honor Society membership.  I am so happy, she told me.  We talked on instant messenger for a while and she was clearly excited about receiving such an honor.

We could never have imagined that you could earn an honor like this when you came here two years ago, I told her.  All those long nights of studying biology and English and world history and other courses in the first semester of her freshman year were almost overwhelming for us.

As I think back now, I remember that not only did Cici survive and conquer those classes, but that is when we also got hit by Hurricane Ike and lost power at our home for about three weeks.  She studied at our office until late at night every night during the week.  We ate junk food while she studied.  When she finished studying I would drive her home and she would shower in the dark, sleep for a few hours, get up in the dark and dress for school, and then we would start all over again.

Ping had already left the office to pick Cici up at school when I got this news, but I know she will be thrilled.

Hey, Uncle Andrew.  Well, there were a lot of doubts in those long dark days and nights of the first semester of 9th grade.  Cici sure proved herself then and has confirmed it in spades since that time of struggle.  Now I worry if a grade drops to 92.
