Over the Top
I decided to remove one of the items that
was listed under the "character" heading on Cici's National Honor
Society resume. The comment was a bit longer than this, but here is the
essence of it:
"Ignoring rather than making an issue about demeaning and hurtful comments by classmates about slanted eyes and Asians being stupid."
Even though the rules were to submit things without being modest, I was afraid that there might be a back lash against Cici if she submitted this one, even though it shows her character very clearly.
In a conversation with one of her teachers early this school year, I alluded to this issue because it had just happened at the freshman/sophomore retreat, just as it happened last year on the retreat. The teacher immediately became defensive and it became clear to me that the school doesn't want to hear that such things happen there. Why put Cici in an uncomfortable position? I kept asking myself. This kind of feedback may well be perceived as being over the top, and it could hurt instead of help her.
We did leave in the character item about how she accepted without argument an after school detention for not having her shirt tucked in, even though the teacher was mistaken. She was wearing a uniform shirt that is not required to be tucked.
No wonder I never made it through high school.

my oldest son who just turned 39 years ago when he was at UT told me one class was a killer, when I asked why he said lots of asians in the class so the curve to get top grades was hard.
Anyone who thinks asians are stupid is not paying attention.

I agree, Harry. Those dynamics are certainly present in Cici's high school. The Asian students typically arrive with almost no command of the English language, but they soon rise to the top anyway.
