Call Me

Today Ping and I were constantly answering the phones.  I spoke with 41 of the callers, most of whom were wanting to schedule a meeting to become a client.  I scheduled meeting after meeting.  We also had six new client inquiries through our website.  What this means was that I was either in a client meeting or on the telephone for twelve hours today.  All Ping could do was slip me a few thick sweet potato slices that she baked and give me some cups of tea to keep me going.

Now not all of the calls were worthwhile.  Would you schedule a meeting with a man who claimed to have bought a six pack of soda, opened one and drank half of it, and then noticed that the other half was full of worms?  Let's assume his story was true.  Do you think anyone would believe it?  I make decisions quickly.  That call took up less than 2 minutes of my day.

I came home to find Cici exhausted even after taking a short nap.  I have so much homework to do, Papa, she told me.  I am so tired.  She was also tired this morning when I woke her.  I was also tired because Cici and Ping didn't climb into bed until well after midnight.  I ended up with maybe five hours of sleep, which I bet is all that Cici got as well.  Lucky Ping got to sleep late and come to the office around 10:00 a.m.

But Ping catches it on the back end.  She is still in the kitchen at 9:30 p.m. preparing vegetables for us to eat at the office this week.  And I brought her some client files to work on tonight.  She has gotten rather good at handling the immigration forms for our clients.

Meantime I checked the mail and showed Cici which college sent her a brochure today.  This time it was Vanderbilt, where only 25% of the applicants are admitted.  I could never go there, she told me.  Don't ever say that, I told her.  You can go anywhere if you keep working hard.  Your language skills are getting better every week, and that means your test scores in all subjects will keep getting better.  You will score higher and higher on your standardized tests too.  What does that mean, she asked.  The SAT and the ACT, I told her.  Oh, I understand now, she said.

But we aren't complaining.  At least Ping and I finally recovered from our allergy attacks.  After four days of a debilitating cloud fogging my brain it felt good to be working in high gear again.  Now if we can just get some sleep tonight ...

Just for the flip side, on Wednesday, in the WSJ, there was an article on seven movers and shakers that were rejected from certain universities.

I doubt that Angela will have a hard time getting in to the institution of her choice, but it might be worth a few minutes to read the article.
