Living in Latin America

The girls thought they were moving from China to North America, but the demographics would argue that point.  Because my kids, including Cici, have attended private schools, I hadn't paid attention to the demographics in the Houston Independent School District, which is the largest school district in the Houston area with a little over 200,000 students.

Last night I read the demographics report from HISD's website.  It was shocking to me.  The break down is as follows:

Hispanic:  61.1 %
Black/African American:  27.8%
White:  7.8%
Asian:  3.2%
Native American:  0.1%

The mean scores on the SAT test are interesting as well.

White:  1141
Asian:  1122
Hispanic:  888
Black/AA:  856

If I remember correctly, however, the average SAT score at the school where Cici is auditioning is more than 1200, and it has a very diverse student body.  Small wonder that it is the top rated public school in Houston.

that is interesting, I'll try to find the same information for Fort Bend ISD & Alief ISD. Most asians I know with school age children go to sugarland if they can afford it & to alief if they are more mid class income. I was also surprised that white scored higher than asian as the asian value & encourage education more that other groups including whites.

To prove your point, Harry, I saw something in the Chronicle this morning about the number of college graduates in the age 22-29 range (if I remember it correctly) in Houston, broken down by race.  I think it was just over 60% for Asians and only 37 % for Whites, with Hispanics and Blacks trailing those numbers.

I suspect the Asian SAT scores for HISD are lower because many of the more affluent Asian families live in Sugarland and Katy where the test scores are very high.  The same is true of the SAT scores for Bellaire High School, where many of the Asian families live in the medical center with highly educated parents.
