Life
Some mornings, like today, I stumble awake as the cool morning air hits me on my way down the front walk to pick up the newspaper. The night was short, it seems, and so many projects await me at the office that I don't know how I will handle all of them. When I get to the office, that feeling changes because I am there and back in control as I work my way diligently through the waiting projects.
What struck me this morning as I walked back to the front door is that it is the combination of the worries about the tomorrows, the memories of the yesterdays, and the whirl of the todays that end up being our life. The rain that I hear falling on the patio as I sit here is part of that life. Cici studying for her English test and writing a current events article for tomorrow is part of that life. Ping going to purchase replacements for the items that were taken from her at the fitness club last evening is part of that life. The rain is now pounding urgently on the skylights as it claims a bigger piece of today.
Cici walked into my office today after Ping picked her up at school. She greeted me with a tap on my shoulder and a cheery hello, curled her legs up under her and sat in one of the leather chairs on the other side of my desk. She just wanted to talk with me for a bit. Ping served us some thick purple sweet potato slices that she cooked in the toaster oven and we talked about school. Cici assured me that she has the music she needs and will be ready for her audition on Saturday.
It was dark and raining outside when we left the office, so Cici rode home with me. She snuggled under a blanket in the back seat because the night air was cold. When I pulled into the drive up lane at Starbucks Cici chided me for a moment. But it is my only treat, I told her. Having done her duty, she joined me by ordering a hot mocha latte for herself. Ping chided both of us when we got home, but I told her it was a shared moment, Papa and daughter. Just a few stolen moments in an otherwise busy day. She gave us a pass, and another day continued into the evening.

I think I missed something about what happened at the gym...

Well Smitty, the girls like to take their shampoo and conditioner and swim suits with them to the fitness club. They exercise and spend time in the spa before taking a shower and washing their hair. Twice now, Ping left her swimsuit and hair products in the shower area while she changed clothes, and both times they disappeared. I think she has learned her lesson now.

That bites! A shame that in this day and age, we still have to use lockers.

Well, it at least gave Ping the pleasure of shopping for a replacement swim suit. I asked her if she bought one at Costco, since I noticed they had some for sale. She said no, because those swim suits were for old ladies and she wanted something fashionable for her age.

Well, Ping is a fashionable woman, that's for sure!

That she is, Smitty, and like mother, like daughter. Cici is very fashion conscious. Fortunately they have taken an interest in dressing me, so I just let them have their way.
