Living in Another World
From sapphire to slate and beyond.
Ping's world is expanding. The day after she received an offer from Chase for a sapphire card, she received an offer from them for a slate card. Today the offer is even more interesting. This one is from USAA. You can't just join USAA because you want to join. You must be military or former military or have a military connection through marriage, for example. It is especially interesting considering that USAA notified us just today that our application to refinance our home at a lower interest rate has been approved and we close in eight days.
Her friendship circle also continues to expand. I am amazed at the number of friends she has in Houston now. I was also teasing Cici because I saw one of her classmates stop and wait for her when she got out of the car at school. Hey Angela, she called as she walked to greet her. She gave Cici a big smile and joined her as they walked into the school. You have more friends than you have been telling me about, I told her. I think it is getting easier for her now that she feels comfortable with the language.
Tomorrow evening we will go to college night at Cici's school. But I won't be able to work out at the gym, Ping told me when I told her about college night. Sometimes we need to do things for our daughter, I suggested. You're right, Ping told me. We will go to college night.
Last night I noticed that Cici closed her bedroom door. I could hear her practicing with her flute. Practicing, I am sure, for her audition on Saturday. She never has to be told what to do and when to do it. If she actually ends up changing schools she will have some Chinese classmates and I know she would be happy with that, but she sure seems to be happy where she is now as well.
Do you still talk with your cousins in China often, I asked Cici last night? No, they are very busy, she told me. Hmm, so is she, but not too busy for talking with friends. I think the cousins have lost their place as Cici has transitioned into her new world. I hope they get to reconnect this summer.

It would be a pity for Angela to lose that connection with her family. Perhaps this trip to China won't be too bad!
