Black eyed Dumplings

I grew up eating black eyed peas and hog jowl on New Year's Day.  Ping grew up eating dumplings to celebrate the Chinese New Year.  Yesterday we combined those traditions.  I bought some smoked pig feet rather than hog jowl and Ping cooked them in a pot of black eyed peas while I was at the office yesterday morning.  She had no experience preparing this kind of food, but it was the best I have ever tasted.  Our Chinese guests also enjoyed eating it.

Ping prepared four kinds of dumplings.  There must have been well more than a hundred dumplings when she and two other Chinese ladies finished stuffing them with the fillings that Ping had prepared.  I asked Cici to get the camera and we took some pictures of us with all those dumplings.  I stood between Ping and Cici for a couple of the photos, my arms around their shoulders.  It was quite apparent to me that Cici is now a little bit taller than Ping.

It feels like the new year is already well under way.  I haven't seen anyone else in our building, but I have have been able to get a lot of work done during the holiday period.  Cici has been working at her final exam preparation, but today and tomorrow she needs to get more serious about it.  She always starts with the subjects that she enjoys, so she is ready for the algebra and geometry tests, and nearly ready for chemistry.  Those tests are next week.  Her English and history tests are not until the following week, so she feels less pressure about them right now.
