Tree Learnin'

Well, after the girls put up the Christmas tree I thought it looked a little odd.  We only used about a fourth of the ornaments, Cici confessed.  Then the big confession came -- they only put ornaments on the side of the tree that faced into the room.  The back side of the tree has lights, but only because they came pre-strung on the tree.  No one will see the back side of the tree, the girls told me.  So we have a Chinese Christmas tree I guess.

After Ping wrapped the gifts, she scattered them beneath the tree.  It was starting to look pretty good.  Last night when I came home, however, there were three large bags next to the tree, but nothing beneath the tree.  What happened to all the presents? I asked Ping.  I thought I would make it easier on everyone, she said, so she had put all the presents for each person into a single bag.  It would be difficult for everyone to claim their packages if they were scattered under the tree, she continued.

But that is the purpose of Santa Claus, I explained.  Someone plays Santa and passes out the gifts one at a time.  Everyone gets to watch as each gift is opened.  So now the gifts are once again scattered beneath the tree, but only on the decorated side of the tree.    But there are no surprises under that tree for the three of us.  Cici told me what Ping had bought for me as soon as they came back from shopping.  Ping did the same thing, telling me what Cici bought for me as soon as they came back from shopping.  Each of them were "surprised" to learn that I knew what they had bought for me.  How did you know?  They each asked me.  I could only shake my head and laugh.
