Ladies of the Club
I think there was a book by that name some years ago.
Lonely? Not these girls. Ping may have lived in America for just a year and a half, but she has an unbelievably busy social calendar. Yesterday afternoon she told me that she had been invited to lunch this morning at the Little Sheep hotpot restaurant by one of her Chinese friends. This lady has been to our office multiple times, usually bringing her baby girl, and we have visited in each other's homes. We have met her parents, who have visited from China. These two ladies first made contact with each other through the internet, and now they have a solid friendship.
But it isn't just an idle lunch for these two friends. The lady is bringing two more Chinese ladies who are friends of hers so she can introduce them to Ping. These Chinese ladies are very good about expanding their circle of friends.
Ping has already become good friends with another Chinese lady who she met this way, and she invited her to lunch near our office a month or so ago to introduce her to a Chinese lady who had just arrived in America. Ping had met this lady in Shenzhen this past summer and stayed at her home the night before she flew back to Houston from Hong Kong. Since then, Ping has introduced her to several of her Chinese friends and made her feel welcome in Houston.
And, Ping continued with her story yesterday afternoon, I have invited this friend and three other Chinese ladies to a shopping expedition on December 22 at the designer outlet mall north of Houston. School will be out then, so Cici will also go with them. Then for December 24 we have been invited to join one of Ping's new Chinese friends and her husband for dinner at their new home
For this weekend Ping has invited Andrew and his Chinese wife to a hotpot lunch at our home. On the other day of this weekend Ping will prepare dumplings for two other Chinese ladies at their request. They enjoy her cooking so much that they invited themselves to enjoy it again. Ping doesn't mind; it is her nature to spend time with her friends.
During the school vacation that is coming up, one of Ping's Chinese friends and her son who live north of Houston will come and live with us for three days so they can visit and cook together and shop.
Then two evenings a week and one day each weekend Ping works out at the club not far from our home where she has become good friends with a Chinese lady who leads one of the aerobics classes. Cici sometimes joins her for these classes. Two other evenings each week Ping goes to English classes where she has made even more new friends.
Ahh but that isn't all. Ping maintains a circle of friends in China that goes all the way back to some of her elementary school classmates. She talks with them by telephone and on the internet, sharing stories and pictures of her life in America.
Ping and I laugh at how closely we resemble our zodiac signs. I am the ox, always working, always taking care of my girls. She is the bright eyed chicken, involved in everything, but never missing anything and always remembering to take care of her ox. She never stops working, whether in our home or at the office. These signs are supposed to be a good match, and for us, it has proven to be true.
Cici is also a chicken, and she relies on the steady ox for everything related to her school and her education. She also maintains a large circle of friends back in China and in other parts of the world where some of her friends now live, from Australia to Canada.
And I am just a country boy.

I was so glad that my wife was invited to go to Little Sheep. She is turning into such a social butterfly.
In the meantime I have found another place to eat
