Winter Wonderland
I looked around the office for Ping yesterday morning and she was gone. Suddenly she came running back all excited and telling me that it was snowing outside. Sure enough, the flakes were falling thick and fast. The flakes were some of the largest I have ever seen, and it snowed for hours. Cici's school closed early so we picked her up around 1:00 and took the back roads home since the freeways were crowded and moving slowly. Cici grabbed the camera, went outside, and took pictures to post on her blog.
The girls were here to witness the earliest recorded snowfall in Houston. But that is only fair. I was in China with them in 2008 to experience the worst winter in 50 years.
But I arrived at the office early this morning, bright sunshine in my face as I drove along. Traffic was light and the roads were mostly dry, but someone forgot to slow down on a long curving exit ramp. It was slick and they ended up in a one car crash, which was causing difficulty for other cars that were using that exit ramp. The air is crisp but the wind is still, so with the sunshine it isn't a bad feeling to be outside in the 32 degree weather. It was below 60 degrees in the office when I arrived so I turned on the heat, and now it feels comfortable here.
One of the clients I will meet with this morning is seeking political asylum from China. He is here on a student visa, but is a member of Falun Gong, and is afraid to return to China. We can help him with this, as there is no doubt that the Falun Gong is on the enemies list of the Communist Party in China.
Ping will take Cici to a Lutheran church around mid-day. The band will practice today for a couple of hours at the church. Tomorrow afternoon they will give a Christmas performance at the church. Just another one of the many weekend activities that the band members are put through, but Cici still doesn't want to give up band. I am still trying to structure a solution with her school, and I at least have their attention now, so maybe something can be done.
