Becoming Irrelevant
A Chinese lady who I represented in a legal matter a few years ago came by the office yesterday. On any objective scale she is a very beautiful woman, yet when she met Ping, all she could do was rave about Ping. You are so beautiful, she told Ping to her face. When meeting with me, she said that I am so lucky because Ping is so beautiful, but also because Ping has such a great personality. She is so easy to talk to, the lady said, and I could tell immediately that she is a woman of great character.
I have to say that it makes me feel good, because I know that all of our clients love Ping. They stop and visit with her when they are leaving the office. They also love the way she has designed and decorated the office. Today they will finally install the entry door that we have been waiting for, and the door should improve the appearance of the office even more. It is as much Ping's office as it is mine.
Ping has also made it easier for me to work later than usual at the office. She prepares and serves a meal for me before she leaves the office on days when I tell her that I will be working late. Yesterday she prepared more of the delicious salmon that she sometimes serves at the office, and I swear it is like eating a gourmet meal at some fancy restaurant.
My vocabulary continues to grow because of Cici. She has ten new vocabulary words to study and use each week for her English class. Sometimes there is a word on her list that I don't recall ever hearing before. Sometimes there is a word that I know, but its meaning is fuzzy for me. Cici is becoming the tutor, and I am becoming the student. It is too bad that she is so good in geometry and algebra that she doesn't ask questions in those subjects. It would be a good refresher for me if she needed my help, but it saves a lot of time because she doesn't need my help. The same is true in chemistry. In the beginning of the school year, she needed help. Now she does everything on her own.
I think I am becoming irrelevant.

I think you worry too much. I'm fairly sure that when Angela goes to China, you will find out how relevant you are.

Maybe so, Smitty. Right now she is still begging me to find a way to go with her.
