Lost in Houston
We lost Ping for a while last night. Cici and I were working on homework when we noticed that we hadn't seen Mama for a while. Mama, Cici called as she walked through the house. She is not in the house, Cici announced. Maybe she is checking on her garden, I suggested. No, the garage door is closed and the garage is dark. We thought maybe she went for a walk, so we called her cell phone. It rang in our home office.
Now Cici, this is very strange. Mama must be here somewhere. But she wasn't in bed or in the bathrooms. She wasn't in the kitchen or dining room or sitting room. The lights were out in the living room and the TV was turned off. She wasn't in Cici's room. Wait a minute, Cici, I found Mama. I had turned on the overhead light in the living room and found her sound asleep on the thick pad that we have on the floor near the home gym system. Our early days and late nights and the changing of her body clock from China to America had caught up with her. We left her sleeping peacefully and returned to the homework.
Can this really be the first day of football and marching band performance at school? I am thinking that Ping and I can stay at the office working during the pregame and first half, and just show up in time for the half time performance by the band. We are both really busy at the office, so maybe we can catch up a little bit this evening. Of course if we had that sofa there already we might just take a nap.
The girls are both celebrating because Monday is a holiday. They need a chance to catch their breath.
I was teasing Cici last night after dinner that she should entertain Ping and me with her flute while we relaxed with some tea. After all, I said, we are getting up early to take you to band practice, so it seems only fair for you to entertain us. She didn't miss a beat. I will be happy to put some music on for you in the cd player, she said with a smile. But she is thinking about bringing her gu zheng home from the office so she can play it here. Now that would be a treat.
