Return of Infinity
Niu baobao, Ping said to me last evening, I miss Infinity. Actually, she called him something like Defenenity, her usual pronunciation of his name. Later, as we walked through the neighborhood, I suggested that we could drive to the pet store and get another fish if she really wanted one. Really? Would the store still be open?
So off we went to Petco, where Ping selected a small red betta. He looks beautiful, doesn't he, Niu baobao? I didn't have the heart to tell her that he looked rather scraggly to me - like he had been on the losing end of some fights with other bettas and lost parts of his fins. Infinity had long, graceful fins that flowed through the water. This fish looked more like someone had just scared it real good, and its fins seemed to be pointing rigidly in every direction. She looked at all the bettas, though, and this is the one she wanted.
Cici stayed home to do her homework and prepared for two tests. I called out to her when Ping and I arrived home, telling her that Mama had bought a new fish. She came running to the kitchen excitedly to look at the fish. He isn't beautiful, were the first words out of her mouth. Shh, I said, placing my index finger to my lips. Mama likes this fish. Help her think of a name for it. Cici suddenly became bashful. You should choose its name, she suggested. No, I named Infinity, I said. You and Mama should name this fish. Then Mama should name this fish, Cici said.
Mama, I called, what will you and Cici name this fish? Cici, she said. No, I said. Angela T., she said. No, I said. Those are our daughter's names. Well, Ping said, we should call him Infinity. I like that name. Just look at him. Isn't he beautiful? Thoughts of the Seinfeld scene flashed through my mind as I dodged the question. Look at the baby. Isn't he beautiful?
Beauty, as we know, is in the eye of the beholder. Infinity has returned in the form of a beautiful red betta. And so it is.

If the Betta has little fins it might be a female.

I figured it out, Smitty. The betta is a male, but is is called a crown tail betta because of its spiky look. I thought the long sweeping fins were the hallmark of a betta, but it turns out that they sell more than one kind.
