Home
I won't respond to each of you individually right now, but I thank you for your good wishes. Our little family is together again.
Did you miss Mama a lot when she was gone, Papa? Cici asked me this question as we pulled into the garage. Ping had gotten out of the car to move the trash container out of the way when I opened the garage door. Yes, I missed her a lot, Cici. I missed her a lot too, Cici volunteered, but I told her I didn't miss her. Cici, don't do that, you must tell her how you really feel! Oh I did, Cici said, I was just teasing her.
At the airport, Ping greeted us with a big smile and a hug for me. She was careful to not leave Cici out of the family greeting for more than a few seconds. I refused to let them do their typical Chinese style greeting, where all the emotions are bottled up inside and no physical expression of those emotions is given. You better hug Mama, I told Cici as I drew them closer together. That is all it took, and they were in each others arms in a big bear hug.
Cici has changed, Ping told me several times. She has grown some and she looks very good. Look how straight her back is now. This was a pet peeve of Ping's, and she constantly reminded Cici to straighten her back. You must have reminded her a lot, Ping said. You did very good. Now the truth is that I didn't constantly remind Cici. I think this was just part of her maturing process.
Ping is easily ten pounds lighter than she was when she left. That is because you weren't here to eat my delicious cooking, I teased. She and Cici have been exploring the heavy suitcases that Ping brought home. I can see why she was given the third degree by the customs lady. Papa, do you know how many little purses Mama has in the suitcase? Twenty! Look, do you know how much underwear she has in her suitcase? It looked like a lot of underwear for two girls, but I am sure she knows what she is doing.
Why did you stay in China so long? I was visiting and taking care of my mother. Why are you coming to America? I am coming home. Where do you live? Houston. Where do you work? The Solomon Law Firm. What does your husband do? He is a lawyer. I think the lady thought that Ping was importing things to sell. These are gifts for my girlfriends, Ping told me, pointing to the small purses.
Ping already cleaned the refrigerator and cooked dinner for us. She has explored her home, making it hers again. You should see these two girls together. They are a matched pair, and they are having a great time reconnecting. Ping has our favorite feng shui music playing on the stereo in our bedroom. They gave me a pass to work on the computer for a few minutes, but it is time to rejoin my girls.
