Next Saturday ...

I was rescued from possible boredom last night by Cici's Uncle Andrew and Aunt Maggie, but it may get me in trouble with Cici.  This is because they invited me to eat with them at the Little Sheep Hot Pot restaurant that opened not long ago near our home.  Cici and I have had our eye on this restaurant but we were waiting for Ping to return before we tried it.  There is a restaurant just like this one, same name and everything, located about a block from our first house in Guangzhou.  I learned from the waiter that they have opened 8 locations in North America, only 4 of which are in the U.S.

Well, I did the next best thing.  I brought home two of their menu's, which are written in both Chinese and English.  No, I didn't steal them - they have a stack of paper menus that customers can take with them.    I also noticed that they have all you can eat specials on Tuesdays through the end of August.  There is only one Tuesday left in August, though, so unless Cici wants to go there next Tuesday, we will miss out on that deal.  I ordered nothing but fresh vegetables, and they were so delicious.  I know Ping and Cici will love them too.

I learned yesterday that at the end of our fourth day of classes today, we will have a two hour written exam - essay questions - before we can receive our certificates for the course.  Fortunately, I am very interested in the subject matter, so I have paid attention and taken good notes.  Stand back, my competitive juices are beginning to flow.

Ping is still feeling the pressure of what she need to complete before she leaves Guangzhou next week.  When I spoke with her last night (Saturday morning her time), she was about to go to place that is making the door for our shower to find out why it has not been delivered and installed yet.  She also had friends and family coming for dinner in a Chinese tradition to celebrate and bring good fortune to our new home.

On Thursday, Ping will travel to Shenzhen, a city that is near Hong Kong, and spend the night with the Chinese woman she met who is traveling to Houston to visit her fiance just three days later.  This lady was actually trying to change her flight so she could travel with Ping, but I don't know whether she has been successful in that effort or not.  Ping will be flying out of Hong Kong to America, and by staying in Shenzhen the night before her flight, she will be close enough to Hong Kong that she can get to the airport in time for her morning flight.

This brings up a good point about travel from China to the United States.  There are many people who believe that a single Chinese woman, especially one who is engaged to marry a man in America, cannot obtain a visitor's visa to travel to America.  The lady with whom Ping will spend the night in Shenzhen has traveled to America several times to visit her fiance.  We have friends in Houston where the same thing has happened, even after the American man had filed a petition for a fiancee visa to bring her to America.  The Chinese lady came to visit him for several months using a visitor visa, returned to China, went through the interview process at the Consulate to obtain her fiancee visa, then returned to America where the two of them married.  But street wisdom being what it is, the nonbelievers will continue to perpetuate the law of the street.

Now about next Saturday - I won't be sitting here alone like I am this morning.  My beautiful daughter will be sleeping soundly in her room, and my beautiful wife will likely be wide awake because her body will think it is early evening.  I bet she will curl up next to Cici and enjoy being back in her home with her family.  Stay tuned - there will probably be a live report.

Oh dear! Someone's in trouble now!

I would like to hear more about the process for Chinese to visit the US. I thought there were quite a few things that the Chinese national had to do and prove to get a US travel visa, but I've never really looked into it.

No question that a Chinese person must meet the requirements, but those who say that it is impossible for a single Chinese woman to get a visitor's visa to come to America are ill informed, as are those who insist that they cannot travel to America on a visitor's visa to visit their fiancee after a fiancee visa petition has been filed.

Sure, when Ping gets back and is with us, your description will change to Good Food, Great Company.    Cici picked up the menu last night and read some of it to Ping on the telephone.  Both of them want to go, so keep your calendar open.
