Smart Marketing or Just Ego?

Your firm ranks among the top 5% nationwide - make sure everyone knows it!  You are among the most highly qualified - just 5% of all law firms in America benefit from this advantage.

So reads the message I just received from the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory.

Each year I am offered the opportunity for my law firm to be listed in the Bar Registry of Preeminent Lawyers, and most of the time I accept the offer.  Each year I wonder whether it is smart marketing to be listed there, or whether I am just feeding my ego.  Each year that I accept the offer they send a beautiful two volume leather bound Bar Register Directory Set that lists my law firm as one of the elite.  They send a glossy wooden plaque to hang on the wall in our office.  Maybe that part of the offer is just to feed my ego.

But this directory is accessed by companies worldwide when they are seeking counsel.  It contains an exclusive on-line search section for only Bar Register preeminent law firms.  Martindale-Hubbell places the bar register icon next to our name in our on-line listing if we pay the cost of all this marketing.  They even send a complimentary copy of the Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers to the General Counsel in each of the Fortune 500 companies.

But you know what influences me more than anything is the pride that I see in Ping and Cici's faces when they look at these leather bound books and the plaque that hangs on our wall in the reception room of our law firm.  I think I just talked myself into making the investment again this year.

Lee, take any marketing offer you can that you know is not a scam, then use it to your best adventage.
