Phases of Life

I discovered today that while I have been on this magical adventure with Ping, a person who I always counted as one of my best friends in life has been struggling with the death of her long time husband from brain cancer.  They lived in Houston when I met them, but moved to California a number of years ago.  Her husband died on February 12, 2008, while I was in China with Ping and Cici.  Aside from being a warm and wonderful man, he had the most beautiful tenor voice you can imagine.  It blended well with her soprano.

My friend and I each embarked on a new phase in our respective lives at about the same time, neither knowing the path that the other was taking in life.  I know she will celebrate my happiness, just as she knows I will mourn her sorrow.  I have been writing our story on a forum and on this blog and in my book, No Price Too Great.  She has written her story and that of her courageous husband on her own blog.  I posted a note there for her today when I found the blog.

We all go through phases in life.  Cici has a cousin who just graduated from college.  He is an excellent young man.  Ping told me today that he would really love to come to America.  It is sad to think that the odds are against him ever coming here even for a visit.  Yet Cici, his young cousin who he grew up with, is now an American citizen.  They are each on a different path, going through another phase in their respective lives.

Most of us are in large part a product of our environment, but education and ambition and even imagination can help one escape the bounds of his or her environment.  Cici is dreaming of visiting China next summer.  Her cousin, meanwhile, is dreaming of coming to America.  If he really wants it, he will find a way.
