Summer of Learning
In Ping's absence, Cici and I discussed yesterday what her summer schedule will include. Use Excel and build a spreadsheet, I suggested. One column for each day of the week. Insert the time in a column on the left margin, and beside the time on each row, list your activity for each day of the week.
Gu Zheng practice and flute practice on alternating days, we decided. English vocabulary words every day. Algebra every day. Summer reading every day. I surprised Cici with books that I had available for this purpose.
TOEFL Vocabulary PowerBuilder Flashcards for Chinese Speakers. More than 1,000 words. If we just learn ten new words each day, we can learn most of them. If we learn twelve words each day, we can learn all of them. The categories of words are: arts, life science, physical science, social science, and college life.
Barron's Algebra. Yes, she already has a knack for Algebra. This will take her to the next level, and save some precious study time during the school year. If she speeds through this, I will get a book on Pre-Calculus for her to study.
Princeton Review. TAKS Exit Level Mathematics. This book has two full length TAKS tests (Texas Asessment of Knowledge and Skills).
If you do this, you won't feel like you wasted the summer, I suggested. You still have lots of time to spend on QQ talking with your friends, and lots of time to watch movies. Four days a week she will come with me to the office and study while she is there. On Fridays she can take the day off but still study at home.
The alternative, I know, would have been to sleep away the summer feeling lathargic and non-productive. I think she knows it too, as she readily adapted to a summer of learning.
